Destinations in the Bavarian Forest

Our heart beats for our homeland, the Bavarian Forest. And of course we think that a trip here is worth it! There are so many beautiful places where you can enjoy the tranquility of nature or where you can immerse yourself in the hustle and bustle of the numerous visitor centers in the Bavarian Forest National Park.

We'll tell you a few destinations that are definitely worth it!

#1 Ludwigsthal – Circular trail to the Haus der Wildnis

We have long counted Ludwigsthal as one of our favorite excursion destinations, not least because it can be easily reached with the forest railway. A circular path leads to the Haus der Wildnis. There are several attractions along the hiking trail: the bear hell with a cinema, various animal enclosures and the visitor center with an indoor playground and interactive exhibition. In fact, we were always lucky to see the wolves very close!

#2 Altschönau animal enclosure

There are even more animals in the Altschönau outdoor enclosure. Moose, bears, native birds and wild boar can be found here. Wild boars even up close, because here you can walk through the enclosure. The Hans-Eisenmann-Haus visitor center and the Waldwipfelweg are also very close by.

#3 big Arber with the small Arbersee

There is more nature and spectacular views on the Arber. We love the hike to the small Arbersee. There you have a beautiful view of the large Arber and no matter what the weather is like, the lake is always worth a visit. By the way, also a great photo opportunity!

#4 Rachel and Lusen

Things get a little sportier with Rachel and Lusen. Some highlights on a hike to the Lusen are the narrow paths through mixed forests, the former spruce forest that fell victim to the bark beetle and the ladder to heaven to the Lusen summit. On the way to Rachel you pass Lake Rachel and climb the last part to the summit on a natural staircase.

#5 Adventure Camp Schnitzmühle

The “Schnitze” in Viechtach is ideal for a weekend trip. In fact, as a rule, this is no longer possible without a reservation. A campsite right on the Regen, with a small pond with a sandy beach and a delicious restaurant! A highlight are the fire bowls, which you can get from the camping shop along with a wheelbarrow full of firewood.

#6 Geisskopf Bike Park

There is a lot to see at the Geißkopf. There are usually numerous mountain bikers and downhillers in the MTB zone. Many of them come with campers and stay there all weekend. Hiking, mountain biking and just watching, it's all indoors.
